Importance of Resilience In Workplace

admin Mar 18, 2023

Has it ever happened to you that you faced a challenging situation in life and you were quickly able to recover from that difficulty? If yes, it reflects that you are a resilient person. Resilience is the ability of an individual to bounce back to a normal state after encountering a difficult situation. However, when one fails in doing so, it reflects low resilience. The workplace offers a wide variety of challenges and difficulties both for the employers and the employees. These challenges are sometimes easy to manage while at times they may take a toll on the individual’s mental health. Resilience plays a vital role in deciding the impact of these challenges and adversities on the individual. A resilient workforce is of immense benefit to the workplace. Following are some of the important roles of resilience in handling tough situations at the workplace.

  • Setting Realistic Goals
Resilience enables an individual to understand themselves and their needs in a better way and also that of others. As a result, the individual sets their goals keeping in mind their capabilities along with others’ expectations. Working with achievable and well-defined goals increases efficiency and gives a sense of satisfaction when it comes to the individual’s performance.
  • Preventing Burnout
Job burnout occurs as a consequence of exposure to prolonged job-related stress which the individual is not able to manage well. It leads to exhaustion at the mental, emotional, and physical levels. Burnout also occurs because of a loss of interest or passion in one’s job. Research shows that poor resilience is related to job burnout at work. Resilience makes an individual cope with the stressors at work, deal with them efficiently, and helps in improving job satisfaction.
  • Lesser conflicts and better relationships at work
One of the qualities of a resilient person is that they take conflicts less personally. They remain in their calm when a difficulty or an issue arises and deal with it in a solution-oriented manner. Resilience also enables the individual to build strong relationships at work with other colleagues and supervisors which makes the working environment healthy and positive.
  • Increased Optimism and Motivation
Research has shown that an individual’s level of optimism is affected by their degree of resilience. This means that a resilient person will have a more optimistic approach toward life when compared to someone who is not resilient. Not only optimism but resilience has also been seen to affect an individual’s level of motivation. Resilience enables an employee to feel motivated and hence perform better at work.

Considering the benefits that resilience offers, it is very important to build resilience and practice it in our day-to-day life. A resilient mindset improves mental health and promotes the good general well-being of the individual.
