Stroke is one such disease, whose root cause is not very well known and multiple symptoms can lead to Stroke. There can be hundreds of reason due to which one may develop stroke. One can develop one or more risk factors, which can further lead up to stroke.
The before mentioned risk factors can be classified into modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Modifiable risk factors include smoking and tobacco consuming habits, high blood cholesterol ,obesity, diabetes, hypertension, excess alcoholic intake, sedentary lifestyle, Atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart rhythms) etc. The non-modification risk factors include Age, Family history, any history of stroke, race (ethnicity) etc.
When we talk about prevention of strokes or safeguarding oneself from stroke, the most important aspect is to understand the underlying risk factors and working on them to alleviate them. Non-modifiable risk factors are those, which cannot be altered, however, one can work on modifiable risk factors and reduce the risk of stroke.

Let’s have small brief on the basic measures to safeguard from stroke:-

Avoid any type of tobacco intake:

“Consumption of tobacco is injurious to health and may also lead to cancer”. We all are aware of this phrase and this does not require any explanations.

Quit or avoid smoking:

Due to smoking, the supply of oxygen to brain and body tissues reduces and hence, it is advised to quit smoking. The science has proven historically that that 1 cigarette reduces 11 minutes from your life.

Control blood cholesterol level:

Blood supply to the brain is diminished due to plaque deposition, and hence one should exercise to control blood cholesterol level.

Try to maintain normal blood pressure:

Lower blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke. Routinely check your blood pressure to check for any abnormal findings and in case of high blood pressure contact your doctor immediately.

Ensure healthy body weight:

Body weight plays a major role in significantly reducing the stroke risks.

Maintain normal glucose level:

If you are diabetic, controlling blood sugar level is very important to lower the chances of stroke.

Maintain active life style:

Avoiding sedentary lifestyle and perform physical exercises to avoid stroke risks.

Say no to stress:

Stress is one of the major concerns that may lead to stroke.

Reduce alcohol intake:

To lower the chances of stroke and to ensure healthy life, alcoholic consumption must be reduced or avoided completely.

Cardiac consultation:

Consult your doctor about healthy heart rate as atrial fibrillation reduces the risk of stroke.

Healthy diet:

Prefer low salt and fat in your diet plan. Fibers are suggested to be included in diet chart. It is recommended to consult your doctor immediately in case of visible symptoms of stroke.
